RUSSIA invaded Ukraine on 24 February 2022, marking a major escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian War, which began in 2014 following the Ukrainian Revolution of Dignity. The invasion has triggered Europe’s largest refugee crisis since World War II, with more than 4.8 million Ukrainians leaving the country and a quarter of the population displaced.
Russian authorities have been accused of waging war, and committing war crimes and crimes against humanity, in violation of international law. The Russian military attracted charges of indiscriminate attacks in densely populated areas exposing the civilian population to unnecessary and disproportionate harm. There were allegations of forced deportations of thousands of civilians from Russian-occupied Mariupol to Russia, sexual assaults and the deliberate killing of Ukrainian civilians by members of the Russian forces. At the end of March, Ukrainian forces recaptured the town of Bucha, located north of Kyiv. Afterwards, evidence emerged of possible war crimes committed by Russian troops, including torture and deliberate killings of civilians.
