In Oradour-sur-Glane, France, the SS massacre is commemorated today with more than 600 dead 75 years ago. Several tens of guests are expected to attend the memorial ceremony. They want to lay wreaths and remember with a minute’s silence to the victims.
The ruined village near Limoges in the center of france is today a nationam memorial site that attracts up to 300.000 people a year. Not far away a new settlement has been created. On June 10th 1944, in the village church the Waffen-SS unit Das Reich had penned the women and children of the village and set fire to the church. The people burned alive. The men of the village were shot mostly with machine guns. In total, 642 people died in the massacre. © ORF.at/Agencies
